Every year, at the Office Pub, there is a quiz league. It runs from October
until the end of June. You almost certainly know this, because you play in it and that's why you are reading this page
now.
In July
the Playoffs begin. Let's call this the business end of the quizzing year. In fact, it's very simple.
The playoffs are a final three week tournament, before the summer leagues start, which decide who the Graz Office Pub Quiz
Champions are for the whole season. Just think American sports and you've got the idea.
And just like American sports, the playoffs favour the
strong and punish the weak. Well, sort of anyway. You'll notice on the quiz website, all the teams have running totals
for the year. Clearly, that means that there is a team in first place (usually the Green Monster) and some team that came
once sometime in November who are last in about 115th.
What happens is this - the top 24 teams over the course of the year qualify for the final
playoffs. That doesn't mean if you're not in the top 24 you shouldn't come - you can still win the quiz, just
like any other quiz night and the playoffs begin as matchups between
the top 24 teams who turn up on the first night of play, which is always the first Tuesday in July.
Confused yet?
Okay, so let's recap. It's a tournament between the
top 24 teams who've been playing during the course of the year. And it's seeded. That means the Green Monster would
be first seed and would play against the team with the 24th seed.
Still not sure? Have a look at the table below.
Indeed, this is where is gets interesting.
During the playoffs, it doesn't really matter where
a team comes, as long as they beat their opponents for that night. Then they go through to the next round. In the event of
a tie, there will, naturally, be a make or break tie-breaker question.
Finally, the 6 teams who won two in-a-row, go to the final, where the top placed team takes
all the glory (which is all we've got to give to be honest).
